UNDP, with funding from the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA) and in cooperation with the Government of Bangladesh, launched the Sustainable Solutions to Solid Waste Project to address the growing social and environmental issues due to underfunded and under-resourced Solid Waste Management (SWM) services in the Cox’s Bazar region.
As part of the project, UNDP developed two cooperative associations of scrap dealers in Ukhiya and Teknaf to formalize the recycling sector in the region. The scrap dealers within the associations were given grants to sustain and expand their scrap business during the pandemic. To improve their business modality, they were trained on environmental safety, waste separation, and value chain methods.
Today the associations have become a beacon of hope for the scrap dealers and people who wish to get into this business in the Teknaf and Ukhiya region. With a consolidated marketplace and imporved market linkage, the scrap dealers associations now can offer a continuous supply of quality recyclable plastics, paper, glass, aluminum, metal, and much more, all over Bangladesh.
The association aims to give the scrap business its due social recognition and unite the scrap dealers under an umbrella of cooperative values.
The mission is to have a formalized recycling sector that will meet the demand for high-quality recyclables that would’ve otherwise gone to landfills further degrading the environment.
